Statistics are values ranging from numbers to fractions generally meaning a record of information, values which decisions and conclusions about a product or event can be summarized. Statistics, or Stats in short form are mostly expressed in charts, tables and graphs, each with its own way of representing data.
Statistics covers all sorts of ways to represent information, besides charts, graphs and tables. Simple percentages can also be used to express a statistic. Out of them, bar charts are most common.
In Chapter 16, I learnt how various charts and tables help represent data and to generate conclusions based on that. Most graphs display frequency, they include: Bar Graphs, where bars are used to represent data, Line Graphs, where data along time intervals are connected with lines to show progress, and Pie Chart, where data is shown out of a whole. Other Charts show exact data so averages can be found easily like Dot Diagram, in which dots represent values on a scale, and Stem and Leaf Diagram where exact whole values are shown to easily show frequency.
Examples of graphs include:
advertising, eg. 50% less trans-fat,
weather forecasts, eg. Frequency of rainfall in June
economics, eg. 20% of people are unemployed
elections, eg. Number of votes for PAP
scientific and medical studies, eg. 1 out of 4 people are cured from a certain type of medicine
expenditure, eg. Average weekly expenditure
astronomy, Frequency of gas giants in solar systems
exercising, Average weight
